With the effects of shock, not to mention significant blood loss and also this being his own wound he could not do this, so this task fell upon his partner. Keeping in mind both my brother and his partner have no medical training at all.

After a local anaesthetic had been administered, he was led to a hand basin, given a sponge and a chair to sit on, told by the medical officer to scrub his wound out for 10min, then present himself to a bed around the corner.
  • Dominic

After a long wait he was seen, and sent for an x-ray. The x-ray showed the power saw had cut into the bone and there were bone fragments in the wound.
  • Sebastian

The wound was then sutured (with the bone fragments in situ) and he was again asked to clean the suture line, other fingers and hands before the wound was dressed.

Medical expertise has fallen below 3rd world standards. Having practised medicine in a 3rd world country, we know he would have received better care. This level of care in this situation in our opinion is significantly lacking. To their credit he was given IV antibiotics and a tetanus shot.

I have never seen this D I Y treatment in my 15 years of nursing. Our mother with her 40 years of nursing has not seen this D I Y treatment either. Is this the standard and level of care we are to expect? Do members of the public need to undertake training with this new style D I Y medicine in Rockhampton?

My brother was driven to the Rockhampton Base Hospital, Tuesday 30th August 2016, by his partner and presented himself at Accident and Emergency with a laceration to the lateral side of his left index finger caused by a power saw. Blood pulsating from the wound would indicate the radial artery was severed.

This suture line will need to be reopened and the bone fragments removed in the near future leading to more pain, suffering and stress when it should have been done at once.
